If someone attempts to tamper with the device, the encryption keys and the PIN will be deleted, just as they are with certain stand-alone point-of-sale systems. The PIN is encrypted instantaneously upon input, and a PIN block with the encrypted PIN is generated. As soon as the encrypted PIN block has been sent from the PIN pad to the connected POS machine and / or the chip card, it is automatically deleted. PINs are encrypted using a number of encryption methods, the most prevalent of which is triple DES in 2022, according to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
When it comes to PIN pads, they must be authorized in accordance with the standards established by the payment card industry to guarantee that they offer sufficient security at the time of PIN input as well as throughout the PIN encryption process. However, there are no set rules since the merchant service provider always has the ultimate say on fees.

Choosing Your POS PIN Pad
The cost to own and operate a point of sale system can vary by hundreds of factors. Some brands offer the hardware in bundle packages, but most will sell you pieces a la carte. That means, you can run into issues when it comes time to integrate your technology.
When looking for a PIN pad that aligns with your operations, it’s helpful to ask questions like:
- Do I want paper receipts or an electronic signature?
- Do I need a touchscreen or is a normal display ok?
- How many types of ways do my customers pay?
- Am I looking to promote or run ads through a PIN pad?
- Do I need to run a loyalty program at checkout?
The answers to these questions should help you know where to start. It’s always important to research each product thoroughly. Some come with hidden fees or lack equipment for complete setup. Once you’ve got your eyes on the prize, installation should be a snap!
We have compared Fattmerchant vs Square, thinking that they were very similar POS and payment processors, but we found many differences and we were surprised by these findings.
Complex industries that handle their own inventory and 3PL organizations have granular requirements about batch recalls, warehouse management and inventory reconciliation. We have reviewed several POS providers. The most interesting according to their industry vertical are: OVVI POS, NCR Counterpoint, Alexandria POS Maid, Verifone Ruby 2 POS, Mynt POS, Indica Online, Reverse, Micros, 1st Pay, Simphony, and Appetize.
There is a type of POS that the majority of readers here do not seem to like. I refer to the POS Pin Pad type. I understand the readers that reject them, but we can recommend it for some type of businesses, as you will read.
Each industry vertical requires a different type of POS, so we cannot analyze them all together in one single group.
