Verifone Ruby 2 Review

Ruby 2 is a point-of-sale system from Verifone (1), an American company (2) incorporated in Delaware (4) sold several years ago (3). This Verifone Ruby 2 system was developed in anticipation of the expected growth of the POS station market (9), also to attend to business requirements conducting electronic commerce, and more particularly to systems and methods for processing real-time payments (6) with cards or physical currency improving also the security during the aforementioned transactions, (5) allowing a better adoption of biometric technology (8) and enabling proper support and maintenance of the point of sale system (7)

Verifone Ruby 2 is a leading POS system for convenience stores and gas stations because with the standard configuration handles different categories of excise taxes for alcohol and tobacco and includes out-of-the-box integration with fuel management systems, thus providing a faster ROI, making these features the Verifone Ruby 2 the most suitable point-of-sale environment for the aforementioned business owners.

Verifone Ruby 2 POS reviews indicate an evaluation of 8.12 / 10 points among current business owners whose retail store is a gas station and 8.99 / 10 points for owners of convenience stores. Reviewers indicate the Configuration Management area of the software as its most notable advantage.

Buying Guide For The Verifone Ruby 2 POS System

For convenience stores, I liked the way that the Verifone Ruby 2 POS system allows to handle the cases where a single product has two different taxes according to factors that I can define in the Configuration Management area. Later, when the customer comes with the product to the counter, I scan it and manually determine with tax type should be considered according to what is defined previously in the Configuration Management menu.

FUEL MANAGEMENT IN THE VERIFONE RUBY 2 POS

For gas stations, the Fuel Management area is very well managed in the Verifone Ruby 2 POS, with inventory management and very easy to understand individual management of the pumps.

Verifone Ruby 2 POS includes the Ruby 2 Terminal, first year priority help desk service, annual maintenance of the software, printer with cable, router, and Ethernet cables to plug in and connect the hardware.

The Verifone Ruby 2 POS system combines fuel dispensing, card processing, cash register, and dispenser card functionalities.

Ruby 2 is a part of the newest POS solutions, known as the Verifone Ruby 2 POS system. It is unveiled by VeriFone for the convenience retail industry. Just like its predecessor, the Ruby Superstation POS platform, the new solution offers the same oil brand, dispenser, and network processor compatibility.

The Ruby 2 point of sale (POS) system software and hardware components are developed by VeriFone Systems, Inc.—a global leader in secure electronic payment solutions. The company started as a pioneer in securing checks, cashless payments, and credit card solutions.

The Verifone Ruby 2 POS system features a range of new technologies that are meant to allow for faster, and efficient processing of fuel/payment transactions. The new solution is designed to engage with new VeriFone media solutions, and apply standardized software in all networks.

At A Glance: VeriFone Ruby 2 POS Hardware and Operating System Integration

When we reviewed the best cash registers for gas stations, we recommended Ruby SuperSystems as a cash register that could be integrated easily with the Verifone Ruby 2 environment.

In that article, we also suggested business owners that they should move away from simple cash register system towards POS systems, and there is where Verifone Ruby 2 comes into place

As opposed to the Ruby SuperSystems POS platform, the new Verifone Ruby 2 POS is equipped with a larger processor. This makes the system scalable to support new capabilities as business needs change or expand. The multi-property processor also allows the workstation to process functions with increased speed.

The unit uses a touchscreen input interface and features a compact design for a reduced footprint. This has made customer and store management a lot easier for gas stations and convenience store owners and managers.

Verifone Ruby 2 POS System Pros And Cons

The Verifone Ruby 2 POS system is currently my favorite system for convenience stores, as I describe briefly in the “Pros” list. For me it is important to be able to work out of the box

I see also a few “Cons”, notably the higher price. However, this higher price is compensated by a better ROI because the system is already integrated out of the box and this helps you to recover your investment quite faster.

Furthermore, consider that the additional integrations are usually provided, a trend that started to appear already since 2021, which is that dealers are offering the integration between systems and initial training as part of the entire package.

Pros

  • It has a good ROI despite the initial high price because it is easily scalable as your business grows in size.
  • User-friendly UI, as it features a customizable layout, allowing for swift cashier adoption
  • Offers more than sixty different reports that may be customized
  • The Workstation features a sleek design, allowing for a reduced footprint
  • Improved transaction processing speed
  • Equipped with an intuitive touchscreen input
  • Allows for easy management of store changes, price changes, and software management
  • Compact design without a keyboard (optional) to save on counter space
  • Supports complete back-office integration
  • Optimized for fuel sales control
  • Compatible with dispenser card readers for all the major pump dispensers
  • Applies fuel icons for audio and visual verification.
  • Prompts for ID verification with tobacco and alcohol sales
  • Stacks fuel sales to free a pump for immediate use
  • Rugged and reliable with a customizable control panel

Cons

  • The Ruby 2 manual would require more detailed explanations.
  • Verifone Ruby 2 POS system requires a connection to the VeriFone Commander Site manager, which will cost you even more. However, dealers are generally including this service in a package, or just as a free feature included if you purchase them the system.
  • Smaller gas stations and convenience stores may find this system to be expensive.

Verifone Ruby 2 Price

The Verifone Ruby 2 price is from $ 3,214 to $ 16,013 with most of the business owners paying a modal average of $ 11,016 depending on the ancillary hardware selected therein.

A VeriFone Commander Ruby 2 Single Terminal POS System has an average price of about $ 11,016 and it is the most price-efficient POS solution for a small convenience store or gas station with a business requirement of only one point of sale.

Verifone Ruby 2 POS Double Terminal Prices

This system is exactly the same that we have described already but with two terminals.

The VeriFone Commander Ruby 2 Dual Terminal POS System is priced at a US average of $15,013. Exactly the same Ruby 2 POS system, but with two connected terminals. The marginal cost is lower for larger convenience stores and gas stations that require several points of sales areas.

This system is exactly the same that we have described already but with two terminals.

Ruby2 has an advantage among the competition: It has a complete environment of hardware products from Verifone that connect themselves.

It is therefore compatible with the latest Verifone product offerings which include media solutions for customer engagement, site management software to efficiently manage multiple locations seamlessly, and the latest in fuel control management.

With Ruby 2, all components of convenience store management can be easily performed with one centralized device. This is not true for other products that do not have a complete environment and you have

The Ruby 2 POS is equipped with high-capacity processors allowing it to grow in functionality as business needs change or expand. The sleek touch-screen hardware allows for more counter space and a smaller footprint for each workstation.

Accesories For The Verifone Ruby 2 POS

VeriFone Commander 16fps Site Controller

site controller verifone ruby 2 POS system

The Commander has a price of about six thousand dollars.

The Site Controller is included with the delivery of Verifone Ruby 2 POS when purchased at an authorized dealer. However, you could need it if you require more capacity after your business grows.

The fact that you have two Verifone Ruby 2 POS terminals does not mean that you need also two Site Controller boxes. You can perfectly

The Commander Site Controller system architecture includes expansion slots and ports to add capacity as your business grows. This will ensure fuel functionality and superior performance for years to come. Commander Site Controller is designed specifically for the harsh convenience retail industry. It is purpose-built for years of trouble-free service.

Commander Site Controller from Verifone offers convenience store owners a versatile site management solution providing increased speed in payment acceptance, fueling operations, and back-office store control

VeriFone MX915 Pin Pad

This pin pad takes a lot of place in the counter in my opinion, but it integrated with the rest of the Verifone environment as soon as we have plugged it in.

The price is about five hundred dollars.

It has a 4.3″ color display, a high-speed processor, and a very good amount of memory for a pin pad device. It is NFC-enabled to capitalize on smartphone transactions, in addition to supporting EMV-approved chip and PIN payments as usual.

verifone ruby 2 POS system
This is a different Verifone pin pad model. I suggest you to ask your dealer about the price of these devices, as sometimes one of them is in discount.

UPS Power Supply Unit

This is just a UPS, for the case you run out of energy. You will still be able to perform operations with the Verifone Ruby 2 system. This is not included with the standard Verifone Ruby 2 POS delivery.

I consider that having a UPS is mandatory for a gas station or a convenience retail store.

If you run out of online connection, operations may be completed offline with this POS and then they will be uploaded afterwards.

Verifone Ruby 2 dealers recommend currently the OneAC model that costs about $ 250.

I have not tested this model. I consider that any UPS system would go well with the Ruby 2 POS and not just this brand.

Datalogic Magellan 1100i Omnidirectional Bar Code Reader

The cost of this bar code reader is around $ 400

This device provides reading on 1D and 2D bar codes as well as supporting advanced features like image capture and EAS tag deactivation.

The External Read Indicator (ERI) allows the Magellan 1100i reader to integrate with other third-party RFID or EAS systems for a truly “future-proof” solution.

Datalogic’s Illumix intelligent illumination technology in the Magellan 1100i reader optimizes light levels to automatically capture images and read codes from mobile phones, or computer display screens.

There are other barcode reader options suitable for the integration with the Ruby 2 POS, but this has a friendly interface for the Verifone environment and there is where we can find its advantage.

Verifone Ruby 2 POS Alternatives

There are many alternatives to the Verifone Ruby 2 POS. Some of them are also Verifone products.

Intuitive User Interface

Just like the outgoing Ruby SuperSystems platform, the Ruby 2 POS system is graphical and relatively easy to use. The simple software interface is equipped with a customizable control panel. This makes it possible for you to tailor your screen menus to your level of sales activity and inventory nature.

You will find the soft key and menu configurations of this system relatively easy to set-up as well as modify. This is mostly carried out through the Ruby 2 Configuration Manager Toolkit. You may access this Toolkit through the Workstation in your store or remotely through a secure IP connection. Additionally, you will also like these UI capabilities:

  • Interactive Display Features

The Ruby 2 display features an on-screen scrolling receipt, and up to 77 soft keys, offering you the utmost in touch screen menu flexibility. Fuel sales may be processed using animated, graphical fuel icons that are capable of managing up to 32 fuel pumps.

The display also has large sub-menu screens, allowing your cashiers to quickly navigate through menus and information.

The on-screen help menus on this system will come in handy when training your staff on how to use the system. They will also offer your staff with quick answers to the questions they may have in the event that the managers are not available to help.

In this regard, an on-screen real-time message board will provide instant access to vital alerts and other important cashier information.

Customizable Reporting

Ruby 2 is equipped with a myriad of tracking and reporting tools to help you manage all business operations efficiently. It allows you to access detailed site information, such as comprehensive transaction logs, sales by category, department, item, and fuel reporting.

Integration Support

As opposed to its predecessor (however some dealers are offering new full integration when you purchase Ruby 2), the Verifone Ruby 2 system is capable of integrating with several other solutions by VeriFone. For instance, it will require you to connect to the Commander Site Controller by the provider.

The Verifone Ruby 2 POS solution is capable of integrating to such VeriFone product offerings as media solutions for customer engagement, and site management software for efficient management of multiple locations.

You may also connect this system to the latest in fuel control management technology by VeriFone as well as by the compatible third-party providers. With Ruby 2 all aspects of convenience store management can be performed from a single centralized device.

It is fitted with a complete touch screen console that allows for fast, efficient point of sale functions and payment processing. The multi-core processors allow it to process transactions with increased speed.

This, along with other convenience and performance improvements to the Ruby 2 allows for easy store and customer management. Such are the aspects that make Ruby 2 yet another exceptional C-store POS system by VeriFone. This system is also ideal as gas station POS.

Recommended Readings

We have compared Fattmerchant vs Square, thinking that they were very similar POS and payment processors, but we found many differences and we were surprised by these findings.

Complex industries that handle their own inventory and 3PL organizations have granular requirements about batch recalls, warehouse management and inventory reconciliation. They need handheld inventory scanners that connect in real time with their point of sales systems and ERPs. We review them here and test them connecting to a Zebra printer. Beautiful!

We have reviewed several POS providers. The most interesting according to their industry vertical are: OVVI POS, NCR Counterpoint, Alexandria POS Maid, Verifone Ruby 2 POS, Mynt POS, Indica Online, Reverse, Micros, 1st Pay, Simphony, and Appetize.

There is a type of POS that the majority of readers here do not seem to like. I refer to the POS Pin Pad type. I understand the readers that reject them, but we can recommend it for some type of businesses, as you will read.

Each industry vertical requires a different type of POS, so we cannot analyze them all together in one single group. Therefore, we have researched in different verticals to define which are the POS systems that we can recommend for each industry and why: Wholesale POS, POS for kiosks, fast foods, POS for restaurants and which of them work well in iPads because some work very bad in mobile systems in my opinion, gas stations, supermarkets, dispensaries, convenience stores, dry cleaning industries, furniture, liquor stores, and bike shops.

What about cash registers? We have reviewed some and we have found good and bad products: cash registers for gas stations, small businesses in general, and restaurants.

We reviewed some specific type of point of sale systems that determine the price according to the weight, called POS scales.

We have studied barcode and label printers, as label printing is a legal requirement in some industries

Restaurants, fast foods, delis and food trucks, require a separate kitchen printer integrated with the POS with a separate hardware unit. We have reviewed them here.

We do not usually review printers for POS, we simply dedicate ourselves to review a complete POS system with its hardware. However, we had so much criticism and discussions around printers for Square, that I have decided to investigate further here.
