Tesla Inc is a US<\/a> company that produces and sells electric cars<\/a> as well as electricity storage<\/a> and photovoltaic systems<\/a>. The company\u2019s goal is \u201cto accelerate the transition to sustainable energy\u201d.[2]<\/a><\/sup> The company name is inspired by the physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla<\/a>. The rights of use for the Tesla brand were granted to the company following an agreement with the Czech Tesla Holding<\/a> following a trademark dispute in 2010.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n The company was founded in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard<\/a> and Marc Tarpenning<\/a>, who left the company in 2008. In spring 2004, venture capital investors entered the company, Elon Musk<\/a> became chairman of the supervisory board and soon became Tesla\u2019s defining figure. At the end of 2019, the company employed around 48,000 people. The market capitalization was around USD 51.1 billion in mid-2018.[4]<\/a><\/sup> The company is based in Palo Alto<\/a> in Silicon Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The roadster<\/a>, built from 2008 to 2012, was the world\u2019s first electric production vehicle with a battery system made of lithium-ion cells<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> It was followed by the development of the luxury class sedan Model S<\/a>. An offshoot of this is the somewhat larger SUV\/van crossover Model X<\/a> with gullwing doors. Since mid-2017, the Model 3<\/a> mid-size sedan has been available and over 500,000 units have been produced (as of April 2020). Models 3, S and X are produced in Fremont (California)<\/a>, with the Model S also being manufactured from Completely Knocked Down kits<\/a> in Tilburg<\/a> in the Netherlands.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup> Tesla used to supply Daimler<\/a> and Toyota<\/a>, among others, with various components for their electric powertrains<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup> In total, Tesla has produced more than one million battery electric passenger cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t
