Black Galaxy is one of the most popular granites in the world. Quarried in South India, Black Galaxy is black in color with gold- or copper-colored speckles that shine when the light hits them.

The original Black Galaxy quarry was opened in the early 1980s and is still producing what’s known as Star Galaxy granite. However, now there are many more Black Galaxy quarries in India. You might also hear this type of granite referred to as Star Black or Galaxy Black.

Black Galaxy granite is usually pretty consistent in appearance, but like all granites, expect some variation from one piece to another. Some pieces are dark black, while others have a greenish tinge or white speckles. The speckles can be small, medium or large. And pieces may or may not have vein lines.

Black Galaxy is available in slabs or tiles. It is a popular choice for kitchen and bathroom counters, floors, decorative tiles and vessel sinks. It is also popular for furniture pieces such as table tops.

Black galaxy falls on the mid- to high-end of the granite price scale. Granites are grouped into five price classifications – A, B, C, D and E – with A being the least expensive and E being the most expensive. Black Galaxy is categorized as a D.

The average price of Black Galaxy countertops, including fabrication and installation, falls in the range of $70 to $90 per square foot. The price varies based on your geographic location, as well as the color and grain pattern of the piece.

If you’re handy, you can save considerably by purchasing prefabricated slabs and doing the installation yourself (although most people will still need to hire a professional to cut the countertops to the proper size).

Looked at another way, let’s say your kitchen has 60 square feet of countertop space – which is pretty average. If you paid $80 per square foot for professional installation, the total project cost would be $4,800. If you ordered prefabricated slabs and did your own installation, the total cost would likely be about $3,000.

Black Galaxy is a very dense granite – it is water resistant and does not require sealing. It is scratch resistant and highly resistant to heat. Because of the color and density, it is almost impossible to stain Black Galaxy.

On the downside, Black Galaxy is an expensive granite. And the polished black color does not do a great job of hiding fingerprints, smudges and crumbs.
