Here\u2019s what I know from owning 4 of them:<\/p>\n

A new hot tub can be as much as 100% markup, meaning the dealer doubled their cost on it. High-tech advances such as Bluetooth speakers, LED lights, enhanced hydrotherapy options have also caused hot tub prices to increase over the years. The average customer pays about $7,000 for a hot tub that fits 4-8 people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But that\u2019s just a quick answer!<\/p>\n

In this article, I\u2019m not only diving deep (pun intended) into WHY hot tubs are expensive, but I\u2019ll also look at some key ways to save money when you do buy yours.<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s dig in deeper!<\/p>\n

You should always be budget-conscious when making any big purchase. Hot tubs are a big investment, but they\u2019re definitely worth it!<\/p>\n

Once you get into the $9,000 or $10,000 range, the increase in quality and style is very noticeable. The quality of materials and build is improved immensely.<\/p>\n

      Like any big purchase. you\u2019re going to be spending a healthy chunk of money!<\/p>\n

      Five main factors affect the pricing of a hot tub.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      If you are interested in buying a hot tub, then ensure you have these five factors in mind, and use them as your hot tub buying guide.<\/p>\n

      1. Hot tub size<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      The first thing to look at is the size of the hot tub. A bigger hot tub means a more expensive hot tub.<\/p>\n

      2. Hot tub features<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Next, you have to look at the features of the hot tub.<\/p>\n

      The overall design of the hot tub influences the price. Better built hot tubs mean a higher price, However, generally the more expensive the hot tub, the better it will be.<\/p>\n

      The more fancy the features are, the more expensive the hot tub will be. Hot tubs can come with automatic water maintenance, apps that control the power of the jets, waterfalls, speaker systems, light systems, and so much more.<\/p>\n

      3. Is it high tech?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Third, research the engineering of the hot tub. The more high tech the engineering, the more expensive the hot tub is going to be.<\/p>\n

      Some hot tubs can be controlled with wi-fi. Others come with Bluetooth speaker systems. Some also come with built-in chillers allowing you to convert it to swimming pool temperatures in the summer.<\/p>\n

      All of those features add to the cost.<\/p>\n

      4. Brand name and quality<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Fourth, research the brand of the hot tub. Some brands are better than others. The last thing you want is to buy a hot tub and find out it was cheaply made in China.<\/p>\n

      The maintenance will cost you more than the actual hot tub.<\/p>\n

      The better the brand, the price will go up. But a great brand ensures that you don\u2019t run into any issues and that if you do, they\u2019ll help you out.<\/p>\n

      5. Ongoing chemicals and maintenance costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Maintenance costs can run you $150-$250 a year in chemicals, cleaning, and filter maintenance.<\/p>\n

      After all, you\u2019ll be adding hot tub shock weekly, and a sanitizer like chlorine or bromine more frequently. Then you\u2019ll occasionally adjust the pH and alkalinity up or down too.<\/p>\n

      When you change the water, it\u2019s a good idea to add a cleaner like Oh Yuk!<\/strong> (click to see it on Amazon), to help clean out the pipes of the bacteria, biofilm, and other contaminants that can get stuck in the pipes.<\/p>\n

      That will help reduce the number of other chemicals you\u2019ll need to add periodically.<\/p>\n

      Lastly, you\u2019ll have hot tub filters too.<\/strong> You\u2019ll change yours every 1-2 years, and a regular cleaning schedule is the key to maximizing that lifespan.<\/p>\n

      6. Monthly electric costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      In truth, a hot tub isn\u2019t that expensive in terms of your monthly electric bill.<\/p>\n

      I\u2019ll get more into this in the next section down below, but expect your electric bill to go up about $20-$30\/month by running a hot tub continuously.<\/p>\n

      7. Add-on options<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      You can splurge and get special add-ons for your hot tub like an Ozonator or saltwater system. This will save you maintenance money in the long run, even if it is a more expensive cost up-front.<\/p>\n

      How much does your electric bill go up with a hot tub?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      While the total price of running a hot tub depends on a variety of factors, many high-quality hot tubs can cost as little as $20 to $30 per month to operate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Cheaply designed hot tubs don\u2019t have the necessary insulation to keep out the cold without causing your electric bill to go up in cost.<\/p>\n

      However, quality built hot tubs will be able to stand up to the harshest winters with a minimal increase in the cost of your energy.<\/p>\n

      One myth to steer clear of is the idea that turning off your hot tub in between sessions somehow saves you money.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      It does NOT save you money. Once the water is heated to your preferred temperature, you\u2019ll save energy and money by keeping it at that temperature.<\/p>\n

      It actually costs more to reheat the water every time you turn it on.<\/p>\n

      Hot tub electricity cost depends on a few factors:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • Unit price per kilowatt-hour<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • If your hot tub is on 24\/7<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • The temperature you heat the hot tub to<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • If you have a quality, well-fitting insulated cover<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        To figure out how much it will cost you, you\u2019ll need to know how much your electric company charges per kilowatt-hour. Mine charges 11\u00a2.<\/p>\n

        Most standard hot tubs are 220-volt (meaning hard-wired and not the plug-and-play style that plugs into a wall socket). Plug and play hot tubs, despite having a less powerful heater, can often cost more because 110v is less energy-efficient than 220v.<\/p>\n

        A 220-volt hot tub will use about 7,500 watts which, in kilowatt-hours, is 7.5 kWh. Simply multiply that number by your electric company\u2019s rate.<\/p>\n

        For me, my hot tub costs about $25 in electricity per month.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

        One way to save heating costs is to set your hot tub\u2019s thermostat circuit timer to heat your hot tub during the hours when it usually isn\u2019t being used.<\/p>\n

        This means you\u2019ll pay less per unit of energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        A second option, which does not require a circuit timer, is to reduce the temperature the water is heated to by a couple of degrees.<\/p>\n

        A third option is to invest in a hot tub thermal blanket.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Lay it across the water and it will keep the heat in, allowing you to lower the temperature but still keep it nice and hot. I love the thermal blanket from Solar Cell<\/strong> (click to see it on Amazon).<\/p>\n

        How many years does an outdoor hot tub last?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

        How long a hot tub will last depends on the quality of the hot tub you purchase.<\/p>\n

        But generally, high-quality in-ground or above-ground hot tubs can last up to 20 years. <\/strong><\/p>\n

        That being said, 10-15 years is the average. Low quality and inflatable hot tubs rarely last more than 5 years. Luckily, in a\u00a0recent article,<\/strong> I get into several things you can do to extend the life of your hot tub.<\/p>\n

        Generally speaking, hot tubs made cheaply out of low-quality materials don\u2019t last nearly as long as a premium hot tub made from high-quality parts.<\/p>\n

        A hot tub\u2019s lifespan is based on a combination of two factors.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        1. Quality of materials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Cheap hot tubs made with lower quality materials won\u2019t last long, even with great maintenance (although great maintenance will ensure a longer than normal lifespan).<\/p>\n

        If the cheap hot tubs are not well maintained, they most likely will last no more than five years. Quality hot tubs that receive routinely great maintenance can be enjoyed for as long as twenty years, maybe even more.<\/p>\n

        2. Proper maintenance and timely repairs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Hot tub equipment will always need periodic maintenance to keep it running properly.<\/p>\n

        I\u2019m talking beyond just adding chlorine\/bromine and changing the water periodically. Filter cleaning and replacing is crucial. But eventually, you\u2019ll also deal with leaks and heating issues, and breakers popping.<\/p>\n

        The majority of hot tub manufacturers and dealers will provide a hot tub owner\u2019s manual when you purchase a hot tub.<\/p>\n

        This manual will show you the proper way of maintaining your hot tub equipment.<\/p>\n

        You should follow what the directions found in the manual. Improper or inadequate maintenance of the hot tub\u2019s equipment can cause them to break. This can snowball into other issues with your hot tub, causing unnecessary stress and cost.<\/p>\n

        You can add significant value to your home with a hot tub that\u2019s built into the ground with nice landscaping around it.<\/p>\n

        So, hot tubs can absolutely increase the value of your home.<\/p>\n

        However, an in-ground hot tub can hold its value better than portable hot tubs.<\/strong> In fact, an in-ground hot tub can add 50% of the original cost to your home value when you sell your home.<\/p>\n

        On the other hand, portable hot tubs may not add anything to the cost of your home.<\/p>\n

        Why do portable hot tubs not bring value to your home?<\/strong> This is because they are considered \u201cpersonal property\u201d (since they technically can be removed\/moved). So from a real estate perspective, they aren\u2019t considered much different than an appliance.<\/p>\n

        What makes a hot tub portable?<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Well, if you see a hot tub displayed on a showroom floor, it is actually a portable hot tub. It can be moved and relocated, even if that means special equipment to deliver it to your home.<\/p>\n

        So, what makes a hot tub in-ground then? It literally sits in the ground, and the plumbing is built-in too, just like a built-in swimming pool.<\/p>\n

        That being said, I\u2019ve owned 4 hot tubs including the 1 at my house now.<\/p>\n

        When I sold the previous 3 houses, 1 of the buyers insisted I remove the hot tub before the sale closed and 1 other buyer removed it after they bought it. But with the most recent one, the buyer actually loved the hot tub and asked that I make sure it was in top running condition.<\/p>\n

        For value, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder.<\/p>\n

        But I don\u2019t buy portable hot tubs to increase the value of a home when I go to sell it, and you shouldn\u2019t have that expectation either.

        Generally speaking, the profit margin on hot tubs is between 30% to 50%.<\/p>\n

        A 40% margin is probably the average. Profit margins and markups, however, are 2 related, but different things. A 40% profit margin actually equates to a 66.7% markup. (source)<\/p>\n

        That\u2019s because profit margins take the difference between the selling price and the cost and divide it by the selling price. In other words, how much of the total selling price is the profit?<\/p>\n

        Markup, on the other hand, represents how much of the selling price is the cost.<\/p>\n

        That means if the sales price on a hot tub in a showroom says $10,000, most likely they paid about $6,000 for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        To ensure you\u2019re getting a good price, do extensive research online. Look at hot tub forums, research pricing, talk to other owners or potential buyers. And always keep your budget in mind.<\/p>\n

        To save money, buying a used hot tub can always save you money!<\/strong><\/p>\n

        A used hot tub can be had for a lot less. I once bought one for only $150! But I paid $350 to move it and $750 for an electrician to get power to it. So there are definite pros and cons.<\/p>\n
