hot tub in garage

When we think of hot tubs, what comes to mind is usually outdoor hot tubs, right? But sometimes we want to soak when the weather isn’t good. In that case, can a hot tub go in a garage?

Here’s what I learned:

A hot tub can easily go in a garage. However, unless the garage door will be left open 24/7, the garage will need a ventilating fan and a dehumidifier. These will help ensure the excess heat and moisture do not create a mold issue.

The above is just the tip of what we’ll explore. Read on to get the lowdown.

In the article, we’ll check out if it’s better to have a hot tub inside or outdoor and how to properly vent the garage and keep the humidity at bay.

We’ll also explore what’s better for a garage hot tub: inflatable vs. plug and play vs. portable? And we’ll wrap up by looking at the best inflatable hot tub for a garage.

Is it better to have a hot tub inside or outside?

Most hot tubs are kept outdoors. However, an indoor hot tub can last longer as it will not be exposed to the elements. Indoor hot tubs do require proper ventilation and humidity control to ensure mold does not become present.

And of course, it goes without saying that if it’s indoors and your hot tub develops a leak, that can also create problems if there is not an easy way to drain the excess water.

But, the truth is an outdoor hot tub is a lot easier to install and maintain.

And, you could put up a structure around it to prevent prying and noisy neighbors from seeing you and your loved ones half-naked.

A key consideration is its weight. When it’s filled with water and people, a hot tub could be up to 5000 pounds! So, it’s not something you want to put on the second or higher floors of your house and a pier and beam foundation unless you’ve had it checked out and certified to be okay by an expert.

And, hot tubs are not exactly inexpensive.

So, when you buy one, you want to minimize the costs that come with the installation. This is one of the reasons why having it outdoors is cheaper.

You don’t want to worry about the ventilation or how you’ll get it through the door, or the smell of chlorine wafting through the house. Most homes have limited space as they’re not designed for hot tubs.

That said, it’s a cinch if what you’re considering is an inflatable hot tub.

After all, it’s only after it’s indoors that you unpack and inflate it. But for hard-sided hot tubs, having an outdoor hot tub is probably better.

I explained if it’s okay to put your hot tub indoors, in a basement, and how to vent a hot tub room.

Do you need ventilation for a hot tub in a garage?

Proper ventilation is required for a hot tub in a garage or any enclosed space. Steam is being released into the air and can be detrimental to the garage because, in time, the steam could lead to mold or mildew on surfaces inside the garage if it is poorly ventilated.

If the garage has several large windows, you may not have much to worry about.

But, let’s face it, most garages aren’t designed to be well-ventilated. They’re conceived as places where you park your car, and some folks use them to keep stuff they’re not using much. In other words, proper ventilation is often the last thing on the builder’s mind.

You’ll need a cool fan (pun intended).

I like this one on Amazon by Genesis as it is highly innovative. It functions as an intake fan and an exhaust fan. It’s got expandable side panels, and it can fit in windows up to 37 inches, just like a window AC unit.

Each side panel can extend an additional 6.5 inches.

In total, it can span 50 inches! It’s an energy-saving device and is ETL-approved. It’s got multiple features: 2 removable stand legs, 3-speed settings, an adjustable thermostat with LED indicator lights, and 2 independent copper motors — so you could use one as an intake fan and the other for exhaust.

It’s got over 5,500 near-perfect ratings on Amazon, and almost all are 5-star. CLICK HERE to check it out on Amazon.

How do you control humidity in a garage with a hot tub?

For a hot tub in a garage, a dehumidifier is crucial for controlling the humidity that comes from the hot water. Without proper humidity control, in time, mold or mildew may become present and create a danger to those soaking and living in the house.

A dehumidifier is an antidote as it’s designed to remove water from the air in an enclosed place such as a garage.

A dehumidifier works like a vacuum cleaner. It sucks in air from one end, sucks the moisture out of it into a tank you have to empty now and then, and recycles the air back into the room.

I like this one by hOmelabs on Amazon.

It can remove almost 50 pints of moisture each day quickly and efficiently. It wards off allergens in large rooms and basements up to 4500 sq ft. Simply set the timer, and it works 24/7. It’s got a defrost and auto-shut-off function. Its filter can be easily removed and cleaned regularly.

It’s got almost 30,000 near-perfect ratings on Amazon!

What’s better for a garage hot tub: inflatable vs. plug and play vs. portable

Plug and Play hot tubs are better for a garage because they have more features than inflatable models, and unlike portable hot tubs, they do not require an electrician to connect them. But inflatable hot tubs are better if the hot tub will not be kept in place permanently.

The truth is that all 3 models are good for garages, but it depends on your needs, whether you own the home, how much money you have, and whether you’ll want the hot tub to stay in the garage indefinitely.

What are the benefits of a plug-and-play hot tub over a more permanent one?

In a recent article, I explained that inflatables and plug-and-play models could be plugged into a standard outlet, but so-called portable hot tubs, which are a lot more expensive, are not made that way. But there’s 1 crucial advantage hardwired hot tubs have over plug and play.

Just click the link to read it on my site.

If you value comfort, they are the way to go because they have many features you’d love. Naturally, they are a bit more expensive, but it’s better to spend a little more upfront than to have to replace an inflatable after a few years of use.

With that said, inflatable hot tubs could be the best choice if you’re on a budget or you want to test the waters before you upgrade to other models.

But if you want to go with an inflatable, are the Intex ones the best?

I devoted a recent article of mine to explore this question. In it, I reviewed the brand and explained that it is well-built and very easy to set up and maintain. It’s the best inflatable hot tub.
