About In-Ground Hot Tubs
There are two main types of in-ground hot tubs:
- Prefabricated hot tubs are factory-built shells made of acrylic or stainless steel. They come in several shapes, including round, oval, square and kidney, but design options are more limited than with custom builds. Some prefabricated shells are pre-plumbed and most seat no more than 10 people. Most have many jets, as well as contoured seats and loungers.
- Custom hot tubs are usually made of a type of concrete known as gunite. They tend to have simpler seating arrangements, such as bench seats, and fewer jets. However, they can be much larger than prefabricated hot tubs and the design options are practically limitless. Often, the concrete is overlaid with decorative tile to improve comfort and aesthetics.
Less often, in-ground hot tubs are made of wood. Wooden hot tubs were popular in the 1960s and 70s before falling out of fashion but have made a small resurgence. Wooden hot tubs can be prefabricated or custom built.
In-Ground Hot Tub Prices
Prefabricated hot tubs are the less expensive of the two options. Acrylic shells range in price from about $3,000-$10,000. Installation adds about another $3,000-$5,000 to the total purchase price.
- A three-person tub that is pre-plumbed sells for about $3,000, not including installation.
- A six-person pre-plumbed tub with 16 jets starts at about $5,000 for the shell.
- Occasionally, you’ll find a very small two-seater for $1,500-$2,000, not including installation.
Custom spas start at about $5,000, but prices can go as high as your budget allows. Most people spend no more than $15,000.
