gutter repair cost

Rain gutters and downspouts perform an important function. They carry rainwater away from your home, preventing costly damage to your foundation and basement or crawl space. If the gutters have been neglected or are in disrepair, they can’t do this crucial job.

However, not all neglected or damaged gutters require complete replacement. In some cases, basic repairs will get your gutters back in good working order. Periodic repairs also prolong the life of your gutters, saving money over the long term.

About Gutter Repair

Most companies that offer gutter installation and cleaning also offer gutter repair services. Repair services include patching holes, sealing leaky corner joints, and reattaching gutters and downspouts that have pulled away from your home. Fix these problems as soon as they occur and you’ll get a long life out of your gutters.

Ideally, you should have your gutters checked once a year during a routine cleaning. Most gutter services will inspect the gutters for free while they’re already on the ladder, then recommend repairs.

It’s possible to tackle gutter repair as a do-it-yourself task, but you can make problems worse if you don’t know what you’re doing. You can’t just nail loose vinyl gutters in place, for example – you risk cracking them and damaging them further. If you’re unsure what to do, call in a professional.

Cost of Gutter Repair

The cost of gutter repair depends on the type of repair, the size of damaged area or areas, and your geographic location. Repairs can range anywhere from about $200-$1,000, although most fall somewhere in the middle.

On a per-gutter basis, plan on spending:

  • $100-130 to repair a 10-foot gutter
  • $130-$150 to repair a 10- to 20-foot gutter
  • $150-$175 to repair a 20- to 30-foot gutter
  • $175-200 to repair a 40- to 50-foot gutter

Keep in mind that repair is far less expensive than replacement. Gutter replacement starts at about $1,000 – and that only covers the cost of vinyl gutters for a small house. Replacement often costs $1,500-$2,000 and can range as high as 6,000 or more for stainless steel gutters on a large house
