DR ADJ REDIST CADV PRIN

DR ADJ REDIST CADV PRIN AMEX Charge

DR ADJ REDIST CADV PRIN is a line item from AMEX that represents a temporary charge against the cardholder.

It is an internal adjustment that is later settled with an opposite entry, ADJ REDIST PURCHASE BAL and it is not a scam.

It is indeed an internal entry that obviously causes some confusion in the customer because the origin of the line item cannot be determined.

DR ADJ REDIST CADV PRIN

According to the empirical evidence that we have since the second half of 2022, it only appears in American Express Platinum cards.

However, the internal entry system is the same for all the credit cards, so we think that it can happen also with other products from AMEX too.

AMEX Internal Transaction

Account adjustments, also known as AMEX Internal Transaction, are entries that are made in the general journal at the end of an accounting period to bring account balances up to date. Unlike entries made to the general journal that are a result of business transactions, account adjustments are a result of internal events.

Sometimes, when full merchant details cannot be captured at the time of the transaction, a default value of “DR ADJ REDIST CADV PRIN” or “AMERICAN EXPRESS INTERNAL TRANSACTION” will be displayed.

Once the transaction is confirmed and processed by the system you will see the correct merchant name appear on your timeline and statement – this process normally takes about two days but can take as long as ten working days to fully process.

But, as we have already said, most of the time we will see an entry like ADJ REDIST PURCHASE BAL to cancel the last charge.

The Statement AMERICAN EXPRESS INTERNAL TRANSACTION

“AMERICAN EXPRESS INTERNAL TRANSACTION” is also similar to DR ADJ REDIST CADV PRIN statement, and you would be seeing both in your reports as different line items.

Sometimes when full merchant details cannot be captured at the time of transaction a default value of “AMERICAN EXPRESS INTERNAL TRANSACTION” will be displayed. Once the transaction is confirmed and processed by their internal system you will see the correct merchant name appear on your timeline and statement.

This process normally takes two to four days to be processed, but some readers reported in the comments section that it could take up to a week to become fully processed.

If you are still concerned by the incorrect name once the transaction appears with an amount on your timeline you should contact American Express with the number that is displayed on the back of your card so they can investigate it further.

  1. Just appeared on my AMEX bill. The total was the points I used for Amazon purchases. It was credited and debited on the same day.

  2. First, I saw this adjustment on my Gold Card, so it certainly is not Platinum Card specific. I saw this adjustment similar to how Todd reported seeing it in his 10/14 comment as it was a credit for a purchase made with MR Points (something shared by the Platinum, Gold, Green, and AMEX Everyday Cards). It seems that purchases made with points are charged like any other purchase, however they are offset with this adjustment. As MR Points are generally NOT refundable, it makes sense that AMEX would wait until the transaction is at least settled before deducting them and applying them towards a transaction. The process works, but it would be great if AMEX made it just a bit easier to understand!

  3. Today just happened to look in the App and I see the Charge and Refund on Jan 12. The isn’t a name of the Merchant even though it’s 6 days later.

  4. I have seen this on my regular Green American Express card numerous times, so it is used apparently on all AMEX card types.
